News | The most ancient figurative artwork ever discovered!
Recently found on the wall of a cave in Indonesia this is a 45,500 year old drawing in red pigment of a creature known as the Sulawesi Warty Pig, which still patrols the jungles of Celebes today.
If you are wondering - as we did - whether it is a Mummy or a Daddy Warty Pig, a Peppa or a little George, it seems that artists at that distant time did not include a creature’s sexual characteristics in their depictions.
So we can only guess.
However we have retrieved from the innermost recesses of Wikipedia a more up-to-date image of the same creature. To our eye it looks as if it is wearing high heels. These seem to be missing on our 45,500 year old specimen.
What does this tell us? God knows.
And what are we to make of the human hand at frame left that appears to be smacking Peppa/George’s bottom?
But the good news is that the archaeologists reckon there is plenty more representational art to be found in this part of the world.
