Smith, Stan - Summer in Oxford
Two scenes in one!
The river flowing through Richard Branson’s country estate near Oxford is the scene for this painting by Stan Smith. In the background are his wife Kate and daughter Jess, while the swimmer with her arm raised is Dominque, who features in the two Blonde Nude watercolours in our gallery. But the figures in the foreground have been imported from another time and location: from a gathering of friends and family Stan Smith painted while on holiday in Italy.
Very few of Stan Smith’s large oil paintings have recently appeared on the open market. Pictures that sold for more than £5,000 during his lifetime remain firmly in the hands of those who bought them. We believe that more people should have the opportunity to own and enjoy his work - at prices they can afford.
