Hely-Hutchinson, Nicholas - Provencal landscape with hilltop village
This painting dates from 1987, when Nicholas was on the verge of becoming a full time artist:
I was still working part-time in an art gallery in London and painting as much as possible when I could. I started painting full-time and earning a living from painting about a year later.
My wife and I used to go to the South of France quite often with our two young children (my son was born in 1987). I would get up very early most days and set off with my paints, and try to get as much done as possible before it became too hot.
The hilltop village is Opio in Alpes Maritimes.
