Born in Romford in 1919, Charles Duranty learnt to love the East Anglian landscape while working as a farm hand during the war, though he only took up painting it in earnest when he was in his forties. He described his paintings, which were often completed on an easel in his office rather than out in the countryside, as “imagined landscapes”.
