In Hamish’s own words, these are the inspirations and influences for the works in his ‘Bafflement’ series:

These works are inspired by action paintings by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Morris Louis, and Jean Arp and ben Nicholson’s three-dimensional reliefs. I’ve used elements from these artists to create ‘planned accidents’, which have both intellectual and emotional underpinnings. Olly Fathers is another contemporary artist making work by deploying the ‘planned accident’ technique. His reliefs are more formal and relate to the urban environment, whereas mine are more organic in nature.
