Description

This is one of three images that Bellany created for The Scottish Bestiary, a book of poems and prose by George Mackay Brown published in 1986 that featured 20 prints of birds and animals by seven Scottish artists.

Bellany has mischievously depicted the wild cat in human rather than feline form. She appears to be clutching  an hourglass, maybe a signifier for mortality, one of the artist’s constant preoccupations.

Bellany also provided  illustrations in The Scottish Besitiary for Eagle and Grouse (which you can see in this gallery under the title The Capercaillie sings his lament.)

The image size is 45 x 30 cm (approx 18 x 12 inches) on handmade paper, sheet size: 75 x 55 cm. It is signed by the artist and marked 25/50.
