Bellany, John - Two women and a fish
It is rather unusual to have two female figures as well as the little dog in a Bellany composition featuring female fisherfolk. Mystery is compounded by the male legs dangling in the background, reminiscent of the sinister dangling acrobat in the background of Manet’s famous Bar at the Folies Bergeres. A deliberate allusion, or a random symbol from his very personal mythology? You never can tell with JB - and he invariably refused to to explain himself!
